Let’s go over a few tips and tricks - and some important do’s and do not’s - when it comes to selecting your wardrobe for headshots.
Outfit Ideas for Acting Headshots in Orlando
Did you know that Orlando and Central Florida has the third largest commercial market in the United States?! That’s one reason why clothing choices for Orlando actors is a bit different than you might find in Los Angeles or even Atlanta!
Nearly every actor in Central Florida needs a strong commercial headshot, as well as a few other specific headshots that clearly represent their types. Florida casting directors love to see a strong nod to specific types without being too “on-the-nose.” Keep this in mind when shopping for your outfits - for instance, if one of your specific types is “medical field / doctor,” go for scrubs or a lab coat, but avoid a stethoscope, which might feel too specific.
Let’s go through 5 common wardrobe ideas for actors that are versatile enough to use for several types, but specific enough to get you an audition.
Classic and Timeless Professional Outfits
Having a professional look is a great way to cover a lot of bases for actor types. A “Professional” type outfit is very timeless and useful in this industry. This look can represent many different roles like: lawyer, FBI/CIA, detective, businessman/woman, etc. Here is how to achieve this great, versatile look for acting headshots:
Formal Suit or Blazer with Crisp Shirt:
A well-fitted suit or blazer in neutral tones such as navy, charcoal, or black portrays a sense of professionalism and sophistication. Try to avoid pin-stripes, as they confuse the camera.
Pair it with a crisp white or light-colored dress shirt for a classic and timeless look that exudes confidence and authority.
Normally avoid bold patterns or flashy accessories to ensure the focus remains on your face and expression, however, if you want to represent a more “Creative Professional” type, you can choose a shirt or blazer with a fun pattern to represent a Creative Professional type. Just avoid really bright colors, like chartreuse or neons.
Alter the clothing colors and materials to get more specific with your type.
Black on black represents villain, tough detective or boss
Light colors represent a friendly professional
Bright or strong colors represent a creative professional
Leather can represent street-smart professional, villain, or can read as modern professional depending on the color
Tailored Dress or Pant Suit for Women:
Women can opt for a tailored dress or pant suit in solid, complementary colors for a polished and professional appearance.
Choose a well-structured silhouette that flatters your body shape and radiates confidence. …just make sure your outfit doesn’t fit you TOO tightly where it might pull or tug when you move.
You can accessorize with minimal jewelry, and keep makeup and hairstyles simple to maintain a professional yet approachable look.
Neutral Knit Sweater:
A neutral-toned knit sweater can provide a versatile and sophisticated option, especially for character and commercial headshots.
Stick to timeless colors like black, navy, or gray to exude a sense of elegance and versatility.
Consider layering a blazer over the sweater for a refined and textural ensemble that adds depth to your headshots.
This look is great for professional types like therapist, professor, librarian, etc.

Casual and Approachable Everyday Wear for Commercial Types
Fitted Button-Down Shirt with Rolled Sleeves:
A fitted, casual button-down shirt in solid or subtle patterns paired with rolled-up sleeves can convey a relatable and approachable vibe. Choose a color that is approachable - stay away from gray and black for this look.
Opt for earthy or muted tones that complement your skin tone and eye color, and add a touch of personality without being distracting.
This look can work well for character headshots, portraying a down-to-earth and relatable persona.
PLAID is the number one choice for Commercial headshots. BBQ Dad, best friend, casual mom, etc. If you need commercial headshots, bring a plaid or denim shirt outfit.
Simple T-Shirt or Sweater:
A simple, well-fitted t-shirt or casual sweater in solid colors allows for a relaxed and approachable look.
Stick to neutral or subdued hues to avoid drawing attention away from your facial expressions.
This relaxed outfit choice can convey versatility and adaptability, ideal for showcasing a range of characters.
Denim Jacket or Casual Outerwear:
Layering a denim button-up (or well-fitted jacket), or stylish casual outerwear over a basic top adds a touch of personality and character to your headshots.
Choose timeless and well-fitted outerwear in classic washes to maintain a contemporary yet approachable appearance.
This ensemble can showcase your versatility and appeal for roles that require a more laid-back or relatable demeanor.

Character-Specific Outfits for Actors
Having specific types represented, as well as your general types, may help you land roles. I recommend having an outfit that provides a “strong nod” to your specific type. If you would also like to get specific, bring some items we can add to the last half of that outfit’s shoot for some variety! For instance, if you are going for the role of “Barista,” having a headshot with an apron may help you get an audition, or even get booked on your headshot alone as a background character. Casting directors do have a great ability to envision you in roles, but let’s make it easy for them by dressing the part.
There are many MANY types you can dress for. Let’s go over just a few!
But before we begin going through outfit ideas for specific types, some excellent advice is: Watch the TV shows or films that have characters you can see yourself auditioning for. What are they wearing? How is theyr hair styled? Copy their outfits for your session and you’ll have an effective, great headshot.
Vintage Attire for Period Roles (lace, and vintage necklines. Go to the thrift store and copy characters from Bridgerton!)
Geek or Nerdy (often just a button-up, nerdy graphic T-shirt, or sweater with glasses)
Wealthy Billionaire / Country Club (pay attention to fabrics and style. Dress to impress and keep the colors and patterns simple)
Jock / Athlete (keep it simple and handsome. A henley or T-shirt with letter jacket are perfect)
Comedic (sweater, fun colors, patterns.. the possibilities are vast for this look)
Doctor / Nurse (scrubs or a white lab coat - avoid the stethoscope - a bit too on-the-nose :)
Uniforms or Work Attire for Character Types (an apron for customer service, a military shirt for army, etc)
Accessories to Enhance Characterization:
Incorporating subtle accessories, such as hats, scarves, glasses, or jewelry, can aid in portraying specific character types or personalities. Especially things like a cowboy hat for a western look.
Use accessories sparingly to enhance the storytelling aspect of your headshots without overshadowing your facial expressions.
Props or accessories that reflect a character's occupation or lifestyle can add depth and intrigue to your portfolio.
Whether it's a doctor's coat, police uniform, or chef's attire, wearing character-specific costumes can effectively showcase your suitability for certain roles.
Ensure that your outfits are clean, well-fitted, and authentic-looking to exude professionalism and commitment to character portrayal.

Add a Splash of Color and Personality for Vibrant Character Headshots
Bold or Jewel-Toned Statement Pieces:
Incorporating a single, well-chosen statement piece in a bold or jewel-toned color can add visual interest and personality to your headshots.
Opt for a vibrant blazer, scarf, or top that complements your skin tone and exudes confidence without overwhelming the frame.
Use color strategically to draw attention to specific facial features and convey a dynamic and memorable presence.
Prints and Patterns for Quirky or Eccentric Characters:
Embrace subtle prints and patterns, such as pinstripes, polka dots, or small-scale motifs, to showcase a more whimsical or quirky persona.
Select patterns that enhance your facial features rather than overpowering them, ensuring that your expressions remain the focal point of the headshots.
This approach can be ideal for actors aiming to convey a range of characters with distinct and unconventional personalities.
Colorful, Textured Accessories:
Experiment with vibrant and textured accessories, such as scarves, ties, or statement jewelry, to infuse your headshots with personality and flair.
Choose accessories that add visual interest without overwhelming the composition, highlighting your attention to detail and individuality.
When incorporating colorful accessories, ensure they complement your overall look and enhance your facial expressions rather than competing with them.
Adaptability and Layering for Versatile Options:
Mix-and-Match Separates for Varied Looks:
Embrace mix-and-match separates to create a diverse range of looks, allowing for flexibility and adaptability during your headshot session.
Layering different pieces, such as jackets, cardigans, or vests, over basic tops can provide multiple outfit options without the need for complete wardrobe changes.
This approach allows you to transition seamlessly between professional, casual, and character-specific ensembles, showcasing your range as an actor.
Classic Leather Jacket for Edgy Characters:
Incorporating a classic leather jacket into your wardrobe choices can add a touch of edginess and versatility to your headshots.
Pair the jacket with complementary tops to create a variety of looks, from rugged and rebellious to cool and contemporary, based on character requirements.
The leather jacket can symbolize resilience and strength, making it a versatile addition for actors aiming to portray multifaceted roles.
Neutral Basics as Foundational Pieces:
Invest in well-fitted, neutral basics such as solid-colored tees, classic tailored shirts, and versatile bottoms to serve as foundational pieces for your headshot wardrobe.
Neutral basics provide a timeless canvas to build diverse outfit combinations, allowing you to layer, accessorize, and adapt your looks for different character portrayals.
Prioritize the comfort and confidence that neutral basics offer, as they serve as the backbone for achieving a wide range of character interpretations.
